Routines and Expectations
Communication:
Family-Teacher communication is essential for your child's success in school. Please do not hesitate to email me with any questions, comments, or concerns. My office hours are Wednesdays 2:30-3:00pm, but I may be available at other times, with notice. Please remember that drop off is a time for quick communications (i.e. play date notifications, etc.) but not for longer conversations. Visiting this website and our Twitter account is a great way to stay up-to-date with important information and examples of student learning!
Drop Off and Pick Up:
I will open the door to 1OC at 7:55am every day. Students who arrive before 7:55am should wait in the cafeteria and walk to the classroom once a teacher on duty dismisses them. Students who arrive after 8:05am should check in at the office. With your help and support, teaching and learning will begin at 8:00am every day.
School is dismissed at 2:30pm Monday through Thursday, and at 1:40pm on Friday. If you are picking up your child, please wait outside the door of 1OC and I will open it at dismissal. At 2:35pm (1:45 on Fridays) remaining students will be brought to the office and can be picked up there. Because of their young age, I do not dismiss students without an adult. However, if you notify me in writing I will dismiss a student with an older sibling. Please use the 1OC Questionnaire to notify me of your child's usual plans, and see below for what to do when the plans change.
Play Dates/Change of Plans:
If your child's after school plan changes (i.e. a babysitter/grandparent/etc. is picking them up), please notify me via email or at drop off. Play dates with a classmate can also be written on the whiteboard outside the classroom.
Morning Routine:
In 1OC, we have a predictable morning routine that will help foster responsibility and independence. Students will sign in at the door by moving their name tag from "At Home" to "In 1OC" and put their Take Home Folder in the bin. Please say goodbye to your child at the door before they find their cubby inside the classroom and put away their belongings. Next they will wash their hands at our classroom sink. Finally, they will go to our meeting area, read the morning message (a teacher will help with this at the beginning of the year), and find a book to read while other students arrive. By allowing your child to complete these tasks independently, they will quickly learn the routines and will take pride in the responsibility. If your child has difficulty saying goodbye at the beginning of the year, you can give them an extra wave from outside our classroom window. We will start our Morning Meeting a few minutes after 8:00am.
Breakfast, Snack, and Lunch:
Be sure to have your child eat breakfast at home, or come to school with enough time to eat in the cafeteria. Please send your child with a healthy snack each day. However, we will have crackers available if a child comes to school without a snack. If your child is buying lunch, please make sure to add money to their account (see the office). If your child is bringing lunch, please label their lunch box with their name. Children are not allowed to share any food or drinks at school.
Absences, Tardies, and Early Dismissals:
When your child is absent due to an illness or vacation, please call the office. If you know your child will be tardy/dismissed early due to an appointment, please let me know ahead of time and then check in at the office when you arrive.
Birthdays:
Birthdays are very special for first graders and we'll make sure to celebrate everyone's this year! As a school policy, we will not be celebrating with food. If your child would like to bring in something for the class, some ideas are: pencils, stickers, bouncy balls, etc. In the past students have also donated something for the whole class to use (i.e. a game during Choice Time, play-doh, a favorite book, etc.) Some parents like to sign up to be a Mystery Reader the week of their child's birthday. Please do not use the classroom as a space to deliver invitations, cards, gifts, etc. If your child's birthday falls on a weekend, we will celebrate it on Friday or Monday. We will celebrate all summer birthdays in June. If your family does not celebrate birthdays for religious, cultural, or other reasons, please share this information with me. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns!
